Vermicompost
Vermicomposting involves the use of red wiggler worms (Eisenia foetida) to compost shredded waste paper and food scraps into a wonderfully rich fertilizer.
The OEC vermicomposting bin is a vertical migration configuration that contains thousands of red wiggler worms that can turn a large bag of shredded newspaper/waste paper and food scrapes into nutrient rich compost in a matter of weeks. In addition, the worms are placed in the aquaponics grow beds to aid in nutrient utilization. Possible teaching topics include but are not limited to: composting; worm biology; nutrient cycling; decomposing; recycling; systems thinking; sustainability; fertilization; and cultural uses of food waste.
