Percent Solutions
Seventh grade students conducted experiments to determine the concentration of acetic acid solution that can be tolerated by field corn. Students germinated seeds in specialized containers. When the seedlings reached between 8 – 14 inches they made acetic acid solutions of various concentrations. The students learned how to calculate the percent solution and then made solutions of 1% to 20 %. Different groups applied the various concentrations to the field corn and then tracked the growth and appearance of the plant over the course of 4 weeks. Additional applications of the various concentration solutions were applied on a weekly basis. The results were analyzed and discussed as part of the acid and base unit in science class.
