Investigating Plant Structures

Sixth grade students visited the greenhouse at the OEC to investigate plant biology and physiology.  Specifically, the students investigated phototropism (the bending of plants in response to light) and root growth.  Students observed sunflowers that had been grown under UV lights.  One set of the plants was grown with the light shining directly on the plants, while the other set of plants was grown with the light shining at a 45 degree angle.  Students made predictions and took measurements to explore the influence that different angles of light has on plant growth.  Students also planted various seeds in  a "RootVue" kit.  The device has a glass side that allows students to see the roots as they grow through the soil.
