Greenhouse Maintenance Project
Greenhouse Maintenance Project
Sixth grade students in their interdisciplinary studies class have taken on the responsibility of learning about and helping with maintenance of several key areas in the greenhouse at the OEC. Students, working in groups, visit the greenhouse on a weekly basis to monitor the health and complete necessary maintenance tasks in the greenhouse. Students are responsible for taking water and soil quality measurements, trimming and transplanting, watering and misting, helping with pest management, and overseeing the general well-being of multiple areas within the greenhouse. Areas that the groups maintain include vermicomposting, hydroponics, aquaponics, carnivorous bog, tropical biome, desert biome, ferns and fruit trees. Different groups are scheduled over the course of the year to maximize exposure and enhance learning opportunities.
