Coleus Cuttings

Students in Mrs. Lynch’s classes visited the greenhouse in the OEC to participate in a long term investigation of coleus cuttings and water chemistry.  Individual students took cutting from several specimens of coleus plants.  The cutting were measured and weighed and then placed in either distilled water or water gathered from the aquaponics tanks in the greenhouse.  The students visited the greenhouse often to see the differences in root growth between the distilled water and aquaponics water.  The class took measurements, made observations and had discussions related to water quality, nutrients and root growth.  In addition, the students were given the opportunity to transplant their cutting to traditional potting soil and then bring the plants home to continue their growth experimentation.
