Building the Bird and Butterfly Garden

Bring on the Butterflies

The OEC at WMS has planted a bird and butterfly garden.  The garden has been populated with native Long Island species reducing maintenance requirements and providing a vital habitat for local birds, butterflies, and insects.  Thus far the staff and students have spotted grasshoppers, praying mantis, finches, robins, swallowtail and monarch butterflies and caterpillars.

The garden was conceived, designed and funded with the help of many parties.  The HWPS Endowment Fund, SEPTA, and the department of School Facilities and Operations all helped provide the necessary funds to purchase the plants, planting supplies and hardscape materials.

The garden was planted in an intensive multi-day initiative with the help of students, staff, parents and volunteers.  This truly collaborative effort will be a showpiece of the OEC for many years to come.  Thank you to all the people involved in making this dream become a reality.
