Biodiversity
Biodiversity is a measure of the variety of life that occupies a certain area or ecosystem. Biodiversity is a key indicator of overall ecological health and stability. The OEC highlights the connections and interdependency that exists between animals and plants.
The OEC is dedicated to heightening awareness of biodiversity. Areas inside the greenhouse and within the courtyard house a multitude of plant and animal species covering a wide variety of families and genera. In addition, the use of Long Island native species enhances the educational viability of the space. Possible teaching topics include but are not limited to; the importance of biodiversity; plant ecology; plant adaptations; climatology; human-plant interaction; victory gardens; medicinal/relaxation plants; Native Americans; and plants in foreign languages.
