Aquaponics
Aquaponics is the marriage between aquaculture (growing fish in tanks) and hydroponics (growing plants in aqueous environments). The fish provide nutrients necessary for the growth of plants in an aqueous loop environment.
The OEC system includes two grow beds using a bell siphon system with two 60-gallon aquaculture tanks. This design enables a wider range of species to be grown both within the aquaculture tank and grow beds. Possible teaching topics include but are not limited to: aquaculture; hydroponics; water chemistry; nitrogen cycling and beneficial bacteria; sustainability; animal husbandry; physics of siphons; small space gardening; and system thinking.
