    What were the District’s guiding principles in developing the reopening plan?

    As always, the District’s highest priority is the health and safety of students, staff, and community. These principles were the driving force in all of our reopening decisions. 

    Where can I find information regarding the reopening plans?

    Who was part of the District’s Reopening Task Force? 

    The District’s Reopening Task Force (40+ members) has been hard at work for many weeks preparing for a variety of scenarios including a full reopening, a partial reopening, and a return to online instruction. The Reopening Task Force is composed of many District stakeholders, including administration, Board of Education members, principals and assistant principals, directors, teachers, and parents. 

    Why did the District decide to offer three Modes of Instruction for students? (Revised 10/19/20) 

    The District is providing three Modes of Instruction at this time. As of October 5, students did return to full in-person instruction if they selected that option over the summer.

    Will the District be prioritizing the return of specific student populations (special education, English Language Learners) based on need?

    Yes, according to the guidance documents, districts can prioritize specific student populations for full in-person instruction. Further information will be shared with parents of prioritized students shortly. Please see the sections on special education and English Language Learners for more specific information regarding those groups. 

    If the Governor determines that there is too high of a risk or if the number of cases exceeds 5%, what is the District planning to do?

    For schools to open, the governor has established that the average daily infection rate of region residents must remain below 5% utilizing a 14-day average. Schools are mandated to close if the region’s infection rate is greater than 9% using a 7-day average after August 1. In the event that schools are closed, the District will enact the Continuity of Instruction Plan. This developmentally appropriate plan differs from the Reopening Plan and outlines synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The Continuity of Instruction Plan can be found HERE

    What is the last date that we can change our preference for Hybrid, Full In-Person, or online instruction?

    Friday, August 21. Students can switch to Full Online Instruction at any time.

    What are the dates of the re-registration periods if I would like to move my child from full online learning to the Hybrid or full in-person mode?

    No later than November 6, 2020 for Quarter 2.

    No later than January 29, 2021 for Quarter 3.

    No later than April 16, 2021 for Quarter 4. (Revised 8/19/20) 

    Can I shift my child from Full In-Person Instruction to Hybrid Instruction at any time or only during the re-registration periods?

    You may change your child’s Full In-Person instruction to Hybrid Instruction at any time by contacting your principal.

    How will we address the social/emotional issues of students in the first weeks of school?

    The focus at the beginning of the school year will be on social/emotional wellness. Our psychologists and social workers will work closely with students, staff, and parents to ensure their needs are met.

    Are all events listed on the calendar in-person or virtual?

    All events are subject to change per social distancing guidelines. Some events will be virtual. Please refer to the District Website at www.hewlett-woodmere.net for the most up to date information on all District and school events. 

     

    HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS

    Will health screening be conducted by the District or are parents required to complete this at home?

    The Department of Health and New York State Education Department guidance recommends that health screenings are completed each school day by parents at home. If a student arrives at school without the required health screening submitted, school staff will complete the screening and take the child’s temperature. The District has currently purchased a software/app for parents and staff to use for their morning health screening. More information will be forthcoming. 

    What is the health screening app? (Added 8/25/20) 

    Students and staff will be using the Frontline School Health Management mobile app to quickly and securely perform a daily health check.

    Will parents be notified that the school needed to take the child’s temperature?  

    Yes. Parents will be notified that they did not complete the mandatory health screening and that staff took their child’s temperature.

    Are visitors allowed into the school buildings? What if I need to pick up my child early?

    Visitors will be significantly limited within the school buildings.  Should your child need to be picked up, you will check in with security and your child will be brought to you.  Should you have to enter the building, a health screening will be required prior to entering the building. Masks will be required.  

    What will happen if my child gets sick while at school?

    All staff members are being trained to recognize symptoms of COVID-19. If your child gets sick while at school he or she will be taken to the nurse for initial examination. If it is determined that your child has symptoms of COVID-19 he or she will be isolated in a separate location specifically created for students who may have COVID-19 symptoms. Parents will be contacted immediately and asked to pick up their child from school.

    What will happen if a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19?

    If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, the District will immediately contact the Nassau County Department of Health for guidance. 

    Will buildings who have a positive COVID-19 case be closed?

    We will follow the Nassau County Department of Health Guidance on how to manage confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19.

    What will be the protocol for a student or staff member to be cleared to return to school following illness or diagnosis of confirmed cases of COVID-19? 

    The Nassau County Department of Health will determine the protocol. 

    What is the protocol to return to school if my child is home with possible symptoms of COVID-19? (Added 9/17/20)

    If your child is home sick with any of the COVID-19 symptoms listed below, regardless of diagnosis, a doctor’s note clearing the child for return to school is required. 

    Symptoms:

    • fever
    • chills
    • cough
    • shortness of breath
    • fatigue
    • body aches
    • headache
    • loss of taste or smell
    • sore throat
    • congestion/runny nose
    • nausea/vomiting/diarrhea

    In addition to a doctor’s note, school nurses have been instructed that every child must meet one of the following criteria to return to school:

    If the child WAS tested for COVID-19 and:

    • Child tested positive:  The child must remain home for 10 days from the start of symptoms, including at least 72 hours fever-free without medication.
    • Child tested negative: The child will need to be fever-free without medications for at least 24 hours. 

    If the child WAS NOT tested for COVID-19 and:

    • There is an obvious alternative clear-cut diagnosis: The rules associated with that diagnosis should be followed.
    • There is no clear-cut alternative diagnosis: The child must remain home for at least 10 days in isolation from the start of the symptoms and be at least 24 hours fever-free without medications. 

    Will parents be notified of a positive COVID-19 case in schools?

    This will be determined by the Nassau County Department of Health. 

    Will additional staff be hired to provide supervision for students who are isolated when feeling ill?

    Each building will determine their staffing needs. 

    What sanitizing procedures will occur if a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19?

    The District will follow NYSED guidance based upon CDC & DOH protocols: 

    • Closing off areas used by a sick person and not using these areas until after cleaning and disinfection has occurred.
    • Utilize natural and mechanical ventilation to increase air circulation in the spaces affected. 
    • Waiting at least 24 hours before cleaning and disinfection. If waiting 24 hours is not feasible, wait as long as possible.
    • Clean, disinfect and sanitize all areas used by the person confirmed to have COVID-19 utilizing EPA approved disinfectants which the district has procured.
    • Once the area has been appropriately cleaned, disinfected and sanitized it can be reopened for use.

    If my child is sick is he/she still expected to participate in online learning?

    This is a parental determination based on the severity of the illness. If your child is well enough and/or able to participate, then he/she is welcome to take part in online learning. 

    If my child is sick and selects to attend classes online, will their attendance record reflect their presence for the class?

    Yes, however if a student is registered for Full In-Person Instruction or Hybrid Instruction they may only attend Online Instruction for up to two consecutive days. 

    How and when will each building be cleaned and sanitized?

    All District buildings will be cleaned, disinfected and sanitized on a daily basis when the building is unoccupied.  All high-touch surfaces such as doors, hydration stations, elevator panels, restrooms, etc. will be cleaned and disinfected throughout the day utilizing EPA approved disinfectants.  

    Who will be responsible for cleaning the desk barriers in classrooms?

    Custodial staff will clean desk barriers on a nightly basis when classrooms are unoccupied.   

    Why can’t students clean desks with sanitizing wipes? (Added 8/25/20) 

    According to the guidance from NYSED, students should not be present when disinfectants are in use and should not participate in cleaning and/or disinfection activities.

    Will desks/barriers be cleaned between classes at WMS and HHS? (Revised 9/17/20) 

    No, we do not have the custodial staff or time between periods to accomplish this task throughout both buildings. WMS and HHS students were provided with placemats that fit on the desks. The students carry them from class to class and bring them home each day.

    What products will be used to clean and sanitize? 

    The District has procured the following products which comply with all applicable guidance:

    Will staff also be required to complete a health screening each day?

    Yes, all District staff are required to complete health screening each school day using the app/software.

    Will there be increased ventilation in the classrooms?

    Yes. All District ventilation systems have been inspected and univents cleaned, filter media changed, motors greased, and fan belts replaced. Each unit will run in “occupied mode” ensuring continual air exchanges. Building Management Systems (BMS) are receiving updated software programming to achieve a higher percentage of outdoor air being brought into the buildings.

    Will students be trained on hand-washing and other safety precautions? 

    Yes, all students will participate in developmentally appropriate training.The importance of healthy hygiene practices will be reinforced by teachers, staff, and signage.

    Will disinfectant wipes be provided for teachers to clean their desks periodically?

    Due to the global shortage of disinfecting wipes, the District has procured washable microfiber cloths and utilizing approved disinfectant spray bottles in various locations for staff use. Microfiber cloths can be exchanged after daily use and will be laundered in-house. As the supply chain becomes available, wipes will be procured.

    Have air filters been upgraded to what is required by the CDC?

    The District continues to procure high efficiency filters that are compliant with manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure proper air flow throughout all spaces and adequate air exchanges. Quarterly changes in filter media will occur during COVID-19 pandemic. This has been increased from the District’s typical semi-annual and tri-annual changes in filter media. CDC & OSHA have stated to improve air filtration to MERV-13, if possible, which filters 0.3 - 1.0 micron particles effectively from the air. The size COVID-19 virus is about 0.125 microns. The district cannot upgrade to MERV 13 (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) and effectively maintain adequate air flow. The thicker filter creates pressure drop, which reduces airflow and diminishes the system's ability to maintain humidity and temperature set points.     If my family travels to a state on the New York State quarantine list, are we required to keep children home from school for two weeks when we return? If so, can students participate in online instruction? (Added 8/25/20) (Revised 9/17/20)

    If you are returning from travel to a designated state, and if such travel was for longer than the limited duration, you are required to quarantine when you enter New York for 14 days from the last day you were in a designated state. The list of restricted states can be found here. Students can participate in online instruction when they return home from a designated state. Students are permitted to return to their selected Mode of Instruction following quarantine.

    How will you monitor the students who have traveled to a quarantine state or out of the country? How can we be sure that they are actually quarantining and not sending potentially exposed students to school? (Added 8/25/20) 

    Parents and staff will need to provide recent travel information daily in the Frontline School Health Management mobile app. We will need to rely on the information provided to us from parents and staff and work together as a community to ensure the health and safety of all.

    Will hand sanitizer be provided and filled in classrooms? (Revised 8/25/20) 

    Yes. Hand sanitizer will be provided in various locations throughout the buildings including classrooms, corridors, outside elevators, large group assembly areas, playgrounds, etc.

    Can students bring their own hand sanitizer? (Revised 8/25/20) 

    Typically, the District does not allow staff and students to bring in personal products in order to comply with Hazard Communication Standards set forth by NYS Right To Know Law.  On August 21, SED authorized the use of personal hand sanitizers on school buses. The authorization did not extend to the school building, so we are requesting that students keep personal hand sanitizer in their backpacks and utilize the District-provided hand sanitizer during the school day.  

     

    MASK GUIDELINES

    What are the mask guidelines? (Added 8/25/20) 

    All students and staff should plan to wear masks for the majority of the school day. 

    All students and staff will be required to wear masks when entering and exiting the school buildings, while riding the school bus, at bus stops, while in hallways, bathrooms, and common areas, while in cafeterias (except when eating), in the classroom, and whenever on school grounds. 

    Mask breaks for students will be at the teacher’s direction and primarily occur when socially distanced and seated while working/listening independently within the classroom. At the elementary level, a mask break will occur at least every 30 minutes. At the secondary level, there will be one break during each class period. 

    During mask breaks, students should lower the mask from the face when safely socially distanced. This could be done using a lanyard or keeping the mask hanging on the ears, lowered to the chin. Masks should be easily accessible during mask breaks and students should be prepared to put masks on if someone comes within six feet of them unexpectedly. 

    Students who cannot wear a mask for medical reasons will be evaluated on an individual basis. Please contact your school principal and nurse if your child has a medical condition that will preclude him/her from wearing a mask.

    Staff will work with students to help them learn mask etiquette and become familiar with the reasons masks are necessary. 

    Teachers/Principals will consult with elementary students who do not comply with the wearing of masks. Repeated offenses will require a parent consultation and/or may be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the District’s Code of Conduct. Secondary students who refuse to wear a mask, or continually remove their mask, may be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the District’s Code of Conduct. 

    How long will mask breaks be? (Added 8/25/20) 

    The length of mask breaks will be determined by the teacher and the age of the students.

    When and where will mask breaks be provided?

    Each school will provide information to parents on mask breaks. The Reopening Task Force is still finalizing the District’s Mask Guidelines. These guidelines will be shared with all parents and staff once completed.

    Is there a specific mask recommended? What kind of masks will be provided by the District? (Revised 9/17/20)

    There are several masks that are effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Please see attached CDC link: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/about-face-coverings.htmlIn following this guidance, the District has procured non-medical (blue) 3-layer disposable masks for adults as well as non-medical (blue) 3-layer pediatric masks to ensure a better fit for our younger population in the event their personal mask is soiled, damaged, or lost.

    The CDC does NOT recommend the following: 

    • Masks that are made of fabric that makes it hard to breathe (ex. vinyl) 
    • Masks with exhalation valves or vents which allow virus particles to escape
    • N95 respirators or surgical masks meant for healthcare workers
    • Face shields as a substitute for a mask

    What should I do if my child has a medical condition that precludes him/her from wearing a mask?

    Please contact your school principal and nurse if your child has a medical condition that will preclude him/her from wearing a mask. 

    Will masks be available if my child forgets one?

    Yes, each building will have a supply of PPE for students in need. 

    Will mask wearing in the classroom be dependent upon the age of the students?

    This information will be included in the District’s Mask Guidelines. 

    What if some students refuse to wear the mask or continually remove their mask?

    This information will be included in the District’s Mask Guidelines.

    Are masks required for parents/guardians when on school property? (Added 9/17/20)

    Yes, masks are required for everyone at all times on school property, including drop-off and pick-up.

     

    TECHNOLOGY & CONNECTIVITY

    We have selected Online Instruction for our child.  When can we pick up our device(s) and/or hotspots? (Added 8/25/20) 

    Please see the list of distribution dates and times below:

    August 26, 2020: Hewlett High School ninth graders or new entrants only. Distribution will occur during the Freshman Focus program.  Details will be shared by the high school staff. 

    Students in grades P-4 who indicated the need to borrow a device on our registration form and students in grades 5, 8, and 9 who will be a part of our 1:1 program can pick up their device from the High School Pool Lobby entrance on any of the following dates: 

    • September 2, 2020: 9 am- 12 pm
    • September 3, 2020: 12 pm - 3 pm
    • September 4, 2020: 9 am - 12 pm 

    Will the District be providing devices for students who need access?

    Yes, the District will provide devices for students who need them based on the registration form that was submitted by parents.  More information will be shared with parents regarding the distribution of devices.  Please keep in mind that the District has a limited number of devices and we are planning based on the responses to the registration form.  Although additional devices have been ordered, there is a significant delay in shipments due to high demand throughout the world.  

    Will the District be providing Internet access for students who need access?

    Yes, the District will provide Internet access for families who expressed need on the enrollment form.  This access will be assigned to the District device that is provided to the student. 

    Will students who are at home be expected to be on the computer for the entirety of the school day? 

    Yes.  The District’s plan allows all students to livestream into their classrooms from home throughout the day and requires attendance during all classes.  Elementary school students will get breaks throughout the day during snack, lunch, and recess.  Middle and high school students will get short breaks in between periods as they switch from class to class and during lunch.  This plan where some students participate in online learning is different from our Continuity of Instruction plan for full online learning, where all students and teachers must participate at home, since school buildings will be closed.

    Can I use a personal device instead of a District device? (Added 9/17/20)                          

    Students in grades 5-12 should use their District device both in-person and at home due to the software and programs that the District has in place on District devices.  

    What time should I complete the daily health check questionnaire for my child on the Frontline Health Management mobile app? (Added 9/17/20)                                                   

    We have asked that parents complete the daily health check questionnaire for their child(ren) at least 45 minutes before they arrive at school. This is to ensure that the building has enough time to print the reports that are necessary to determine who will need an in-person health screening. Parents may fill out the questionnaire as soon as they’ve taken their child’s temperature, but no later than the following times: 

    • FECC: Complete by 8:10 AM                                                                            
    • OES: Complete by 7:20 AM                                                                                     
    • HES: Complete by 7:20 AM                                                                                   
    • WMS: Complete by 8:20 AM                                                                                    
    • HHS: First period - Complete by 6:40 AM; Second period - Complete by 7:25 AM

    TEACHING & LEARNING

    What is the schedule for Hybrid Instruction? (Revised 8/25/20)

    When will parents find out if their child/children are in Group A or Group B?

    Parents will receive notice from individual schools as soon as schedules are completed but no later than August 27. 

    Will siblings be in the same groups?

    Yes, siblings will be in the same group, regardless of school attended. 

    Will a calendar with cycle days be distributed to all parents?

    Yes. 

    Why can't my child be changed from their assigned A/B cohort? (Added 8/25/20) 

    The District has made a concerted effort to assign A/B cohorts so that students are equally (or nearly equally) divided in each class. We are unable to accept requests for a specific cohort.

    What student learning management platforms will be utilized?

    P-4: SeeSaw, 5-12: Schoology 

    Will students be changing classes?

    Students at the elementary level will remain in their classrooms all day. Special area teachers will travel to each class during their scheduled period. When the weather permits, special area classes will be held outside. 

    Students in grades 6 and 7 at Woodmere Middle School will be in the same classroom for their “core” classes.  Students will change rooms/cohorts for exploratory classes.  Dismissal times will be staggered between classes when needed.  Grade 8 students will be changing class throughout the day. 

    Students at Hewlett High School will be changing classes with health and safety protocols in place. These protocols include one-way signage, signage for up/down staircases, social distancing markings, and the required use of masks in hallways. 

    Will cohorts of students remain together for departmentalization in grade 5?

    Yes. Teachers will travel from class to class instead of students.

    Will lockers be used?

    There will be no locker use at any of the District’s five school buildings.

    Can WMS and HHS students bring a backpack? (Added 8/25/20) 

    Yes. WMS students must use a drawstring backpack. High school students are permitted to bring backpacks to school.

    If there are no lockers, will students be required to carry all of their books and belongings with them each day?

    More information regarding textbooks and supplies will be distributed by individual schools.  Students should arrive at school with minimal personal belongings. Students should also be sure that their District device is fully charged each day. Parents/students will be provided with information from each school on the use of backpacks and the items to bring to school each day. 

    Will field trips be allowed?

    As of this writing, all field trips will be virtual per the CDC, NYSDOH, and NYSED School Reopening Guidance Document.

    Will there be any changes to the grading policy? 

    Students will be graded on the same criteria as they have always been at the elementary level using our standards-based report card. Attendance, behavior, participation, effort, and academic performance will all be evaluated. As always, teachers will be in contact with parents if there are individual concerns to be addressed.  

    WMS and HHS teachers will share the course grading criteria with parents/guardians and students at the beginning of the school year.  Any questions regarding the grading policy or individual grades should be directed to the teacher, followed by the departmental chairperson. 

    Is the before-and after-care program running?

    Yes. Additional information will be forthcoming from the Five Towns Community Center.  

    Will the PTA after-school programs be available?

    More information will be forthcoming from PTA.  

    Will extracurricular activities and athletics take place this year? (Revised 10/19/20) 

    Starting on October 19, 2020, extracurricular activities may begin virtually. Click here for a list of activities that may run virtually. In-person extracurricular activities will be delayed until at least November 2, 2020.

    Will there still be small group classroom activities such as science labs, reading groups, projects, etc?

    Yes, as long as there is appropriate social distancing, masks are worn, and safety protocols are in place.

    Will elementary students be able to visit the school libraries to browse for books? 

    No, because there would be too much handling of books. The librarian can wheel a cart of books to classes for borrowing and appropriate sanitizing. 

    WMS and HHS are still developing their protocols for library visits. 

    Will elementary students be able to browse classroom libraries?

    No. Teachers will provide books for students to use. We are trying to limit student handling of common items.

    For students who have selected Full Online Instruction, will there be a procedure for picking up books and other materials that they might need at home? 

    Yes. There will be designated dates for pick up of items necessary.

    Where will students have recess? 

    During inclement weather, elementary students will have their “recess” period in their classrooms. On other days, students will be able to go outside with their cohort to play while maintaining social distancing. When social distancing is not available, students will wear masks. 

    Recess at the middle school will take place outside, weather permitting. During inclement weather, indoor locations that allow for social distancing will be used. Lunch and recess at the elementary schools will take place outside, weather permitting. During inclement weather, the classrooms will be used. 

    Will school playgrounds be open at the elementary schools?

    Yes. Small groups of students from the same cohort will be allowed to use the playground.

    What procedures will my child use when he/she has to use the restroom?

    At the elementary level, students will be given a disposable pass when using the restroom. No more than two students will be allowed at a time in the restroom. Middle stalls will be closed for use, where applicable.At the middle school and high school, students will request a paper pass from their teacher or building stakeholder to show the person supervising the restrooms.  Only one student at a time will be permitted into the restroom.

    At the secondary level, how will extra help be administered while ensuring social distancing?

    Each building will communicate plans for extra help. 

    Will outdoor learning be permitted?

    Each building will have their own plans regarding outdoor learning. 

    Are teachers allowed to use printed materials or does everything need to be digital?

    Teachers will provide work digitally for those students who are online. 

    Will students be required to turn on their cameras when participating in class online?  

    Yes.  Students should turn on their camera during live instruction.  During independent reading or other activities, students will be permitted to turn off their camera, at the discretion of the classroom teacher. 

    Will guidelines regarding student expectations while participating in online learning be created and shared with parents?  (Use of avatars, appropriate dress, appropriate location, behavior, attendance for the entire session, etc. are among the issues that might be considered).

    The District will share a guide to digital etiquette that outlines the expectations for online learning.  This will be in line with our Code of Conduct and our Network and Technology Acceptable Use Policy that are already in place.  In addition, teachers may share additional expectations with their students at the start of the school year and review these with their students. 

    How will classroom tests and assessment be given to students who are learning remotely?  

    This will vary based on grade level and content area.  Both formative and summative assessments will continue to be essential components of instruction.  Utilizing the selected learning management systems and digital tools, teachers will be able to share assessments with their students. 

    How can we ensure the validity of assessments for students who are learning remotely?

    The students who are taking assessments remotely will be expected to have their camera on while taking the exam.  When taking the exam on a District device, the teacher is able to monitor the student’s activity on that device and prevent them from accessing other sites.  Additional training will be provided for our teachers in order to assist them with this.

    How are students able to participate in class when watching online?

    Students who are participating in class online will be seen and heard by the teacher and can ask questions verbally or through the chat feature in the video conferencing platform.  The majority of our teachers will use Google Meet, but some may use Microsoft Teams, depending on the nature of their work and the features that they need.

    Why are classes not being recorded? (Added 8/25/20) 

    Video recordings of classroom lessons qualify as “education records” and as such are protected under FERPA. District counsel recommends that we do not record classroom sessions.

    I have no childcare while all students are on a hybrid schedule. Can you provide me some information? (Added 8/25/20)

    SPECIAL EDUCATION

    Will the District prioritize daily in-person instruction for students with disabilities?

    Yes, the District is prioritizing daily in-person instruction for all students in special class programs with a ratio of 12 or fewer students.

    Will related services (e.g., speech language therapy, counseling, etc.) be scheduled to reduce cross contact between classes or cohorts?

    All related service providers will group students within a class or cohort to the greatest extent practicable.  

    How will related services be provided online?

    Each related service provider will schedule his/her students for their services (except for speech therapy at the MS/HS which is scheduled during dedicated periods).  For small group sessions, this may require a mixed group with both live and online students.  Students participating from home will log into their sessions and participate in the activities as directed by the provider.  

    If my child was recommended for mainstreaming will she/he be able to push into the general education classroom?

    Children who are recommended to push into a general education class will be able to participate with their typically developing peers. 

    If I opt for full online learning, how will my child receive his/her special class program?

    All students learning from home will be required to participate in daily livestreaming.  The classroom teacher and teaching assistant will work with both the in-person and online students throughout the day. The special education teacher will continue to work on student goals, per the IEP, and monitor progress. 

    If I opt for Full Online learning, how will my child receive his/her integrated co-teaching program?
    All students learning from home will be required to participate in daily livestreaming during which both the general education and special education teachers will provide instruction to the students via whole class or small groups. The special education teacher will continue to work on student goals, per the IEP, and monitor progress. 

    If I opt for Full Online learning, how will my child receive his/her classroom accommodations? (Revised 8/27/20)

    The teachers will implement the accommodations on your child’s IEP to the greatest extent possible. Some accommodations cannot translate to the online setting (e.g. preferential seating) while others may be adjusted to meet your child’s needs. For example:

    • The way Google Meet works, although your child may not have physical proximity to the teacher or board, all students will essentially have preferential seating as the teacher and/or the SmartBoard or presentation will be central on the screen;
    • If your child has refocusing and redirection on his/her IEP, the teachers will be creative in using other means (e.g. visual or auditory cues, self-monitoring checklists) to help keep him/her engaged throughout the lesson;
    • If your child has check for understanding on his/her IEP, the teacher may use a tool like NearPod to push quick assessment questions to students to determine what your child knows and when (s)he needs more instruction and assistance;
    • If your child has copies of class notes on his/her IEP, they can be provided electronically by the teacher to the students working from home.

    How will accommodations such as copies of class notes and extended time for assessments be addressed for online learners? (Revised 8/27/20)

    Copies of class notes can be provided electronically by the teachers to the students working from home. The District has access to a variety of technology that can be used to implement testing accommodations during assessments. Staff will ensure that accommodations are implemented per the IEP to the greatest extent possible. Some examples of testing accommodations that can be implemented via technology include: text to speech and speech to text can be enabled; extended time can be set within online testing programs; refocusing and redirection can be done via auditory cues and/or use of the messaging feature. 

    How will my child’s assistive technology recommendations be implemented during online learning sessions?

    Students will have access to the technology recommended by the Committee to the greatest extent possible. Many of the technological recommendations translate well to online learning. For those that do not, adjustments may be made on a case by case basis to ensure the needs of the student are met (e.g. FM unit may translate to use of headphones when learning online).   

     

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

    Will the District prioritize daily in-person instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs)?

    Yes, the District is prioritizing daily in-person instruction for English Language Learners. Instruction for all English Language Learners (in-person or online) will include all required stand-alone and integrated periods pursuant to Part 154 of the Commissioner's Regulations.  Required units of instruction will be based on students' most recently measured English language proficiency level as evidenced in their most recent NYSESLAT or their NYSITELL assessment. 

     

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION & ATHLETICS

    Will physical education classes still take place?

    Yes, all physical education classes are recommended to take place outdoors when possible (weather permitting) and instruction will take place as indicated above. At WMS and HHS there will be no access to locker rooms and students should come to school prepared to participate on the days they are scheduled for physical education. Following national guidelines, physical education instruction may look different. 

    Most instruction will follow SHAPE America guidance with focus on individual activities and possible flipped classroom activities. There will be limited use of equipment and will be disinfected after use. 

    What is the status of interscholastic athletics? (Revised 10/19/20)

    As of September 22, Section VIII has announced the sport season dates for the upcoming high school winter, fall and spring seasons to begin in January 2021. Mr. Viegas shared this information with parents in a letter on September 23. The letter can be found here. At this time, there is no information provided for modified middle school athletics.

    *Sports listed with an asterisk are defined by the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) as "higher risk" sports. Although they are included in the sport seasons listed above,
    further guidance from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and the Governor's Office isrequired before a return to play.

    THE ARTS

    Will performing ensembles take place?

    Yes, performing ensembles will take place in middle school and high school. Class sizes will be reduced by creating additional sections using the existing staff. Proper space and protective equipment will be used. 

    • Band will create small chamber ensembles that will practice during lesson periods. Regular class periods will be used for music theory, music history and composition.
    • Chorus will be broken up into smaller groups using existing staff to create multiple sections. Face shields, proper distancing, and larger spaces will be utilized.
    • Orchestra will run as normal using face masks and proper distancing. If class sizes need to be reduced we  will add additional sections using existing staff.
    • All music students will need to utilize the Flip Grid program for all performance based assessment.
    • All students must proactively participate when at home during online learning.
    • Instrumental lessons will continue at the elementary level.

    Will there be a high school musical? 

    Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold the high school musical in November. We are looking into the possibility of a spring musical. 

    Will there be a middle school musical?

    A decision regarding the middle school musical will be made in January. 

    Will students share art supplies?

    Most students will be given individual supply packets that have been put together by the teachers. These packets will be used in the classroom as well as at home.

     

    FOOD SERVICES

    What will lunch periods look like?

    Elementary students will eat lunch in their classrooms while supervised by a lunch aide. Middle and High School students will eat lunch in the cafeteria (or alternate locations such as the chorus room and library at the high school). The number of students in each space will use strict social distancing guidelines as they obviously will not be wearing masks while eating. 

    How will meals be distributed for those students who are learning from home on any given day?

    Meal distribution will begin again on Tuesday, September 8 following the same procedure as spring. Parents or students can pick up one breakfast and one lunch per student at the drive up/walk up window at Hewlett High School every school day between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm until further notice.

    Who is eligible for these meals?

    All students enrolled in Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools.

    Is there a cost for these meals?

    Students approved for free or reduced price meals will get these meals for no cost. Those students who are not on this program would pay for their meals.

    What is the cost?

    Breakfast cost is $1.85, lunch cost is $3.00.

    What is the best way to pay for my students meals whether in school or learning from home?

    Please use the online prepayment system in place already. Go to the Hewlett-Woodmere District website to make payments with RevTrak. You will need your child’s student ID number. Please visit www.hewlett-woodmere.net and click on lunch payments.

    I am hearing that many local eateries are only allowing HHS students to purchase food to go and not permitting in-person dining. Where are students supposed to eat once they have purchased food? (Added 8/25/20) 

    Hewlett High School will allow students to return to the building for lunch. Seating will be provided in the cafeteria, internet cafe, and library. HHS is also looking into purchasing outdoor seating.

    Are meals now free for all children? (Added 9/17/20)

    Yes, as of now meals are free for all children up until age 18. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently extended meal programs for school districts to provide free meals for all children through December 31, 2020 as long as funding is available for the program. Please see the September 16 letter explaining the program from Dr. Marino HERE.

    What meals are included?  (Added 9/17/20) 

    Children are eligible for one free breakfast and one free lunch meal each day. The free breakfast option is only available at schools who currently have a breakfast program (HES, WMS, HHS). Students who attend in-person at one of our buildings will be able to choose from the menu each day in the cafeteria. Parents or students participating in Online or Hybrid Instruction may visit Hewlett High School on school days from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM and can choose between two cold sandwiches, one hot lunch, and one kosher option.     Will I get a refund for meals that have already been paid for? (Added 9/17/20)

    Yes, refunds will be retroactive to September 8. The refund will be issued to parents by the end of October. 

     

    TRANSPORTATION

    Are masks required on the bus?

    Yes, masks are required for all students who are riding the bus. 

    How often will buses be cleaned? 

    Buses will be cleaned daily; high-touch areas will be wiped down between routes.

    How will the District handle complaints from the bus driver, students, or parents about a student who will not wear a mask on the bus or repeatedly takes his/her mask off?

    Per the Student Code of Conduct (Policy #5300), students who refuse to comply with the requirement may be suspended from the bus.
