NYS Standards for World Language Education*  

Standard 1: Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.
Standard 2: Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.    *Note:  NYSED has adopted new standards for World Language Education.  Implementation will begin in grade 7 in August 2023.  For more information on the new standards, click here.        

COURSE OFFERINGS        

Chinese 1B Grade 8:      

This course continues to develop the four basic skills introduced in Level IA: oral expression, auditory comprehension, reading and writing. The course offers a more intensive study of vocabulary, structure, idioms and the study of the culture and tradition of the Chinese people. The pinyin system will be studied in conjunction with simplified characters.  Major emphasis is placed on the development of communicative proficiency. Upon successful completion of both Levels IA and IB and a passing grade on the Regional FLACS Checkpoint A exam at the end of the year, students will receive one unit of high school credit.    

French 1A Grade 7:

This is a beginning course in the French language. Emphasis is given to communicative proficiency through the development of oral expression, auditory comprehension, and reading and writing skills. This course introduces vocabulary, structure, idioms, and the study of French culture.

French 1B Grade 8:

This course continues to develop the four basic skills introduced in Level IA: oral expression, auditory comprehension, reading and writing. The course offers a more intensive study of vocabulary, structure, idioms and Francophone culture. Major emphasis is placed on the development of communicative proficiency. Upon successful completion of both Levels IA and IB and a passing grade on the Regional FLACS Checkpoint A exam at the end of the year, students will receive one unit of high school credit.

Italian 1A Grade 7:

This is a beginning course in the Italian language. Emphasis is given to communicative proficiency through the development of oral expression, auditory comprehension, and reading and writing skills. This course introduces the vocabulary, structure, idioms, and the study of Italian culture.

  Italian 1B Grade 8:

This course continues to develop the four basic skills introduced in Level IA: oral expression, auditory comprehension, reading and writing. The course offers a more intensive study of vocabulary, structure, idioms and the study of culture and traditions of the Italian people. Major emphasis is placed on the development of communicative proficiency. Upon successful completion of both Levels IA and IB and a passing grade on the Regional FLACS Checkpoint A exam at the end of the year, students will receive one unit of high school credit.

    Spanish 1A Grade 7:

This is a beginning course in the Spanish language. Emphasis is given to communicative proficiency through the development of oral expression, auditory comprehension, and reading and writing skills. This course introduces vocabulary, structure, idioms, and the study of Hispanic culture.

Spanish 1B Grade 8:

This course continues to develop the four basic skills introduced in Level IA: oral expression, auditory comprehension, reading and writing. The course offers a more intensive study of vocabulary, structure, idioms and Hispanic culture. Major emphasis is placed on the development of communicative proficiency. Upon successful completion of both Levels IA and IB and a passing grade on the Regional FLACS exam at the end of the year, students will receive one unit of high school credit.

    N.B.: As per NYSED regulations, the study of a language must begin in grade 7 unless the student is language exempt as per his/her IEP.
