Outdoor Environmental Center - WMS
The Outdoor Environmental Center is a diverse teaching resource contained in the inner courtyard of Woodmere Middle School. It includes a fish and turtle pond, a bird and butterfly garden populated with native Long Island plant species, two teaching centers with space enough to conduct full class or small group instruction, several planting beds that are rotated on a seasonal basis, and a fully climate controlled greenhouse that contains a wide variety of plant species using diverse growing techniques. Students from multiple grade levels use the center to conduct science experiments, learn about native species and agriculture, compost cafeteria waste, inspect plants for pest damage and nutrient deficiencies, and explore interesting growing techniques such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and propagation.
