Growing Corn in Sand and Soil
The sixth grade interdisciplinary classes visited the greenhouse at the OEC to conduct an experiment on the influence of growth media on the germination and stem height of sweet corn. The students planted some of the corn seeds in potting mix and some in play sand. They returned to the greenhouse several times to collect data on percent germination, stem height, and visible differences between the corn in the two different growth media. In addition, students learned about confounding variables that influence experimentation (i.e. some of the corn seeds were planted too deep thus preventing any germination). Please enjoy the following pictures of the students and their teacher during their lessons. Many thanks to Mrs. Hoolan.
