    REVIEW OF SOLVING EQUATIONS

    Adding:

    ·        Positive + Positive = Positive

    ·        Negative + Negative = Negative

    ·        Negative + Positive- Use the sign of the larger # and subtract

    Subtracting:

    ·        “Keep, change, change”

    Multiplying and Dividing:

    ·        When both signs are the same, the answer is positive

    ·        When the signs are different, the answer is negative

     

    Two-Step Equations

    How to solve a two-step equation:

    ·        Decide what to remove to get you closer to x = . . .

    ·        Remove it by doing the opposite or inverse operation

    ·        Do that to both sides

                 - 6 = - 6

                  3x = 48

    Distributive Property

    The distributive property means that: You get the same answer when you:

    ·        multiply a number by a group of numbers added together, or

    ·        do each multiply separately then add them

    5(3x + 2) = 15x + 10  or 5(3x) + 5(2) = 15x + 10

    *Make sure that BOTH the numbers inside the parenthesis get multiplied by the number outside the parenthesis.

     

    Variables on both sides

    ·        Remove the x with the smaller number in front of it first

    ·        Solve the 2 step equation that remains

     

    Multi-Step Equations

    ·        Distribute, combine like terms and solve
