    May 19, 2020

    Dear Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Community,

I hope this letter finds all of you safe, well, and enjoying the warmer weather. The fresh air and sunshine certainly helps during this time of extended school closure. The recent news that schools will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year was not easy to hear, but I remain incredibly proud of the fortitude of our students, staff, parents, and community members.

As I have shared previously, Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order mandates that New York State schools forgo planned school breaks to comply with the 180-day waiver and avoid the loss of state funding. This means that we are required to maintain continuity of instruction, the distribution of meals, and emergency childcare on Friday, May 22.

Since Memorial Day Weekend is a time to relax, enjoy the outdoors with family, and honor our fallen heroes, we will be issuing a Districtwide assignment for all students and staff for May 22. This will allow the District to comply with the Executive Order, while remaining cognizant of the needs of our community.

The assignments will allow all of us to learn more about our flag and the wonderful monuments erected to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedom. CLICK HERE FOR ASSIGNMENTS.

The District WILL be distributing meals on May 22 at Hewlett High School between the hours of 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Meals will not be distributed on May 25.

I know that we are all anxiously waiting for additional information regarding the District’s summer programs. Governor Cuomo is expected to announce decisions about the summer at the end of May. We will share that information with you as soon as it is received.

I wish you all a weekend filled with happy, relaxing moments with your loved ones. I hope you are able to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Long Island while remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. I look forward to seeing all of you when we are able to gather as a community once again.

    Kind regards,

    Ralph Marino, Jr., Ed.D.

    Superintendent
