    May 15, 2020

Dear Members of the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Community,

I hope this letter finds you and your families well.

I am writing to provide you with information regarding end-of-year grading. Please know that the decisions outlined below were made after considerable thought and discussion regarding a wide variety of factors. Our goal was to be sensitive to the present circumstances, and the possible impact to our District’s families.  With that in mind, our approach to grading has been designed to provide valuable feedback and create incentive for learning, but with intent to “do no harm” to our students’ grades.

    FECC/HES/OES Third Trimester Grading:

Since accurately reporting mastery of standards is not possible during a time of remote learning, numerical grades will not be provided.

Grades P-4: Teachers will provide individualized feedback via a written narrative.

Grade 5: Courses will be graded as Pass/Fail and teachers will also provide comments.

Special Area Teachers (P-5): While our special area teachers have been assigning activities and meeting with your students, they will be providing a Pass/Fail on the report card for the final trimester.

WMS/HHS 4th Quarter Grading: Full Year Courses*:

Once again, our objective for WMS and HHS students is to recognize accomplishments achieved during the first three quarters and provide incentive for remote learning. In addition, we do not want to penalize students who may have had difficulty due to extenuating circumstances during the school closure.

If a student achieves a 4th Quarter numeric average that is equal to or higher than his/her average for Quarters 1, 2, & 3 (combined), the numeric average will be used for the 4th Quarter. If a student achieves a 4th Quarter average that is lower than his/her average for Quarters 1, 2, 3, a “P” for pass or an “F” for fail will appear on the report card. If a student has numeric averages for all four quarters, the standard formula will be used to calculate the year average. If a student receives a P/F for the 4th Quarter, the year average will be based on an average of Quarters 1, 2 and 3.

    WMS/HHS Half-Year Courses*:

If a student achieves a 4th Quarter numeric average that is equal to or higher than his/her Quarter 3 average, the numeric average will be used for the 4th Quarter. If a student achieves a 4th Quarter average that is lower than his/her Quarter 3 average, a “P” for pass or an “F” for fail will appear on the report card. If a student has numeric averages for both quarters, the standard formula will be used to calculate the semester average. If a student receives a P/F for the 4th Quarter, the semester average will be based on the Quarter 3 average.

*Please know that that we will maintain traditional grading for our college level courses.

Final Exams:  There will be no June final exams with the possible exception of a few college level courses. Teachers will notify students regarding the final exam.

Please feel free to contact your child’s principal if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Be well.

    Kind regards,

    Ralph Marino, Jr., Ed.D.

    Superintendent
