    Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you know, the District is in ongoing contact with the New York State Department of Health, the Nassau County Department of Health, and our BOCES Health and Safety partners regarding the 2019 Novel (new) Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Any guidance for our schools will come from these agencies.

As of now, there are no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in New York State. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the same preventative actions should be followed as with any contagious respiratory illness. These include covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (and then disposing of the tissue), avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth, frequent and thorough handwashing, avoiding contact with those who are ill, and staying home when you are feeling sick. Please see the attached fact sheets for additional guidance.

Earlier today, several HWPS staff members met with District physician, Dr. Brian Blinderman, to discuss precautions. Dr. Blinderman stressed that this illness is just like the flu in that it is spread through coughing and sneezing. He reiterated the importance of the preventative measures listed above.

It is important to know that all of our school nurses have been informed and trained on the latest recommendations and protocols from the CDC.

In addition, Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools maintains a strict cleaning protocol that includes daily disinfection of all high-touch surfaces in our buildings, including handrails, doorknobs, light switches, faucets, and push bars, etc. This protocol was developed to ensure proper response to multiple pandemics.

As I am sure you are aware, there is a great deal of misinformation circulating about this virus. Please rely only on credible sources for updates, particularly the health agencies linked below:

As always, the health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We will continue to keep you informed as new information becomes available.  Thank you in advance for following the prevention guidelines listed above and joining us in doing all we can to keep our community safe and healthy.
