Dear Franklin Families,
December’s Book of the Month is The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, by William Joyce.
This book is about Morris Lessmore and his love for words, stories, and books. Morris’s own life was a book of his writings, his joys, sorrows, all that he knew and everything that he hoped for. But he knew that every story had its upsets and one day his did and the wind blew it all away.
Morris began to wander because he didn’t know what to do or where to go. As he walked he came across a beautiful lady drifting through the sky, being pulled by a festive array of flying books. She knew all Morris needed was a good story to make him feel better so she sent him her favorite. The book led him to an extraordinary building filled with as many books and stories as he needed. Morris spent hours and days sorting through the books and finding stories that made him happy. He found great satisfaction in caring for the books, fixing the bindings and unfolding the dog eared pages.
Morris liked to share the books with others, everyone’s story matters. Morris finally found his story again and began to write his own book. He wrote of the joys and sorrows, of all that he knew and everything that he hoped for. It took years and when he reached the last page of his book he knew it was time to move on. So he left the extraordinary building and all the books were sad and Morris Lessmore flew away.
One day a little girl appeared with Morris Lessmore’s book in her hands and the little girl began to read, and this is how the story ends as it began, with the opening of a book.
