Sustainable Garden Project

April 24, 2012

Dear Members of the Hewlett-Woodmere Community,

As you may be aware, the Hewlett High School Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) is planning a sustainable Community Garden on the property of the Hewlett House on East Rockaway Road. The idea for the garden blossomed two years ago when students attended a conference on sustainability hosted by the Society of Organizational Learning (SoL) Education Partnership.

Through grants from the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Endowment Fund and HSBC Bank, the garden that the members of YLF dreamed of is now coming to fruition. The students are working in close partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension to plan the garden, the layout, the number of beds, and the herbs and vegetables best suited for the ground conditions and area.

It is our mission to involve the entire community in this exciting project! Planning for infusing the garden into all levels of curriculum is currently taking place at all of our schools, but we would like community participation as well.

To that end, we invite you to join us at a Community Garden Planning Meeting on Wednesday, May 2, from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the Hewlett High School Library at which students and members of the Cornell Cooperative Extension will present the concept and the plans for the garden. Please feel free to invite your friends and neighbors who may or may not have children in our schools to join us at the meeting. All are welcome!

We look forward to moving into the next phase of creating a vibrant, beautiful, and sustainable garden of which the entire Hewlett-Woodmere community can be proud.

We look forward to seeing you on May 2 at 6:30 PM.

Sincerely yours,

Thomas Russo
