Dear Parents and Guardians,

It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming our students back for the first day of school and now we are already about to embark on our Holiday Recess. Time sure flies here at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools!

Our schools are always humming with activity, but never more so than during the holidays.  Most recently, students in Hewlett, Ogden, Woodmere Middle School, and Hewlett High School sparkled on our stages during the Winter Concerts.  It was a musical feast for the ears as our talented musicians entertained audiences with spectacular vocal and instrumental performances.

Artists from every grade had their original works of art unveiled in the halls of the Woodmere Education Center during our Gallery One opening. All are welcome at WEC to view the artwork of these gifted artists!

The holiday spirit of caring and giving has been alive and well at all of our schools. At FECC, Holiday Share is teaching students about the many holidays classmates celebrate. Family members join students by reading stories about their holidays and sharing traditions. Ogden Elementary School is celebrating their second annual Holidays Around the World event. The hallways and lobby at Ogden are decorated to represent many holidays from different countries and religions. Artifacts loaned from OES families are helping the students to understand other holidays and cultures. The event culminates with a grand multi-cultural feast for students and staff.

Earlier this month, students from Hewlett Elementary School, Woodmere Middle School, and Hewlett High School participated in Operation Holiday Cheer at Dees Nursery. Students wrote cards and poems to our men and women in the military serving overseas. Students traveled to John F. Kennedy Airport to help load the cards, gifts, goodies, and trees on planes destined for the Middle East so our service men and women can enjoy some holiday cheer.

Most recently, our students shared their thirst for knowledge with us at the Hewlett High School Interview Day, Woodmere Middle School Science Fair and Consumer Olympics, Family S.T.E.A.M. Night at Ogden Elementary School, and the Family Literacy Night, 2nd grade Rocket Launch, and Expert Fair at Hewlett Elementary School. Tomorrow, our FECC Pre-K students will participate in the time-honored tradition of the Puff Ball Celebration!

In November, our Hewlett High School musical once again “wowed” audiences with an unforgettable rendition of Gypsy. More than one hundred of our high school students participated in this outstanding production. Next up in the world of musicals is All Shook Up at Woodmere Middle School this March. Watch our Website and Facebook page for ticket information. You won’t want to miss it!

Our fall athletic teams had a wonderful season with seven of our varsity teams named as Scholar Athlete Teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The boys Varsity volleyball team won the conference championship, and the boys soccer, girls volleyball, and girls tennis teams all qualified for the playoffs. Check our athletics Website for the winter sports schedule to join in cheering on our athletes. Go Bulldogs!

As you can see, our students and staff have been quite busy since our doors opened in September. The Holiday Recess is a perfect time for all of us to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate. I hope you each have the opportunity to create special memories with family and friends.

On behalf of everyone here at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, I wish you peace, happiness, and joy in 2017!

Warm regards,

Ralph Marino, Jr., Ed.D.
