    The list is arranged chronologically by graduation year. Please be aware we do not update the online statements with subsequent accomplishments. We prefer for text to remain the same as what appears on plaques that line the halls of the high school. (Plaques also include photos.) We note the induction year indicating information provided is what was known when the honoree was selected.

      In recognition of his 35 years of service as an educator, captain in the United States Army and Principal of Hewlett Elementary School.
    • PAUL KANTROWITZ, Class of 1932
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of his 35 years of service to Hewlett-Woodmere as an attorney, trustee of the public library and treasurer of the Hewlett-Woodmere School District.

      In recognition of his contribution to community betterment as an educator, athlete and humanitarian.

      In recognition of his outstanding service to the Hewlett-Woodmere community as an educator.

      Hall of Fame Induction 1999
      In recognition of her exemplary dedication to the children and less fortunate of the Oceanside community and as an active businesswoman and owner of Camp DeBaun.
    • DR. HOWARD E. LYNCH, Class of 1939
      Hall of Fame Induction 2000
      In recognition of his distinguished career in the educational arena with numerous leadership positions in professional and civic organizations. His notable accomplishments as a superintendent include successfully introducing the redesign of open spaced schools in New York State.
    • BENJAMIN MOLENO, Class of 1939
      Hall of Fame Induction 2000
      In recognition of his outstanding community service including fifty years as a Commissioner of the Hewlett Fire Department. As a lifelong resident, his dedication to our community in various activities is noteworthy.
    • DR. WILLIAM SCHWARTZ, Class of 1939
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his distinguished accomplishments as a physician, health care advocate, medical researcher and journalist.
    • ROBERT PLONSKY, Class of 1944
      Hall of Fame Induction 2002
      In recognition of his outstanding expertise in civil engineering, including seventeen years as the Town Engineer of the Town of Hempstead. His notable experience throughout decades of distinguished public service is marked by leadership roles and honors.
    • RICHARD BROWER, Class of 1945
      Hall of Fame Induction 1999
      In recognition of his contributions as local historian, keeper of memories and ardent horticulturalist. With his recent death, our community lost a member of one of Woodmere's earliest families.

      In recognition of her accomplishments as a watercolorist, textile designer, community volunteer and fundraiser.
    • ROGER C. FOLZ, Class of 1946
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of his business acumen, civic leadership and philanthropic endeavors.
    • JESSE MARGOLIN, Class of 1946
      Hall of Fame Induction 2007
      In recognition of his commitment to human rights, leadership in national, state, city, and local organizations and charitable efforts. His involvements include the American Jewish Committee, their National Legal Committee and Blaustein Institute for International Human Rights, Fund for Global Human Rights, American Friends of Hebrew University, other nonprofit foundations, American Bar Association’s Nonprofit Corporation Law Committee of the Business Section, and Temple Beth El of Cedarhurst.
    • ELLIOT D. SPIRO, Class of 1946
      Hall of Fame Induction 2003
      In recognition of his inspirational leadership and service in a myriad of civic, charitable and professional organizations. He was NY District (State) Governor of Kiwanis International, and Director of Independent Insurance Agents Association of NY. Other board positions include UJA, Nassau Heart Fund, American Cancer Association, Five Towns Community Chest, and South Nassau Communities Hospital. He was one of the founders of Tempo Group.
    • DR. DANIEL H. MINTZ, Class of 1947
      Hall of Fame Induction 2000
      In recognition of his dedication to find a cure for diabetes as a clinician, scientist and medical school faculty leader. His major research contributions, directorship of training programs, and twenty-five year position as Scientific Director and Chief Academic Officer of the Diabetic Research Institute have influenced research at universities around the world.
    • SHEILA COHN KISLIK, Class of 1949
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of her years of community service as President of the Five Towns Music and Art Foundation, Five Towns Community Council and the Hewlett-Woodmere School District.
    • LAWRENCE N. COHEN, Class of 1950
      Hall of Fame Induction 2009
      In recognition of significant achievements in business, local government and charities. He was President, CEO and Chairman of Lumex, Inc., manufacturer of medical, rehab and fitness equipment; Vice-Chair of Health Industry Manufacturer Association and Chair of its Home Care Products Committee; board member of Long Island Association; Village of Brookville Trustee, Police and Road Commissioner. Philanthropic efforts include Dowling College, UCP, Alzheimer’s, Anti-Defamation League of B’nai Brith, National Association of Christians and Jews, Helen Keller Services for the Blind, Suffolk County Boy Scouts, Southside Hospital, and volunteering as an AARP Driver Safety Instructor.
    • SELWYN G. “JERRY” RUDNICK, Class of 1950
      Hall of Fame Induction 2003
      In recognition of his leadership in numerous community service organizations. Notable distinction in Kiwanis Club includes ascending to the position as Lt. Governor for the LI North Division. In Manhasset, he has served as President of the Chamber of Commerce and Commander of VFW Post 5063. Current board positions include working for the benefit of a Pediatric Trauma Center, Child Care, and Community Chest.
    • DR. DONALD GREENBERG, Class of 1951
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of his achievements as an architectural engineer, computer graphic researcher and author.
    • DR. JAY HYMAN, Class of 1951
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his service to veterinary medicine, humane efforts on behalf of marine life and charitable endeavors.
    • PETER S. LISS, Class of 1952
      Hall of Fame Induction 2003
      In recognition of his devotion to the George W. Hewlett High School community throughout his career spanning 34 years as a Spanish teacher, including service in an advisory capacity to students and to foreign language teacher organizations. Mutual support, concern and respect between his students and himself resulted in this talented educator's ability to make a difference in his students' lives.
    • BARRY STONE, Class of 1952
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of his business leadership in life insurance, and as a United States Olympic Committee Fundraiser, United Way Chairperson and Multiple Sclerosis Champion.
    • STEVE BERNHEIM, Class of 1953
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his significant contributions as a journalist, publisher, professional sports manager, litigation lecturer and committed coordinator of community activities.
    • DR. CAROL R. FOGEL KEYES, Class of 1953
      Hall of Fame Induction 2000
      In recognition of her remarkable achievements as a leader, developer, and author in the education profession including outstanding contributions to the field of early childhood education. Her presentations have been heard at national and international conferences.
    • DR. PETER R. BREGGIN, Class of 1954
      Hall of Fame Induction 2001
      In recognition of his internationally recognized reform work in psychiatry as a practicing physician, author, scientific presenter, consultant, and faculty member, including expert appearances on popular television shows. He is the founder and Director of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology
      (ICSPP).
    • AUDREY GREENBERG LANDAU, Class of 1954
      Hall of Fame Induction 2005
      In recognition of her dedication to community involvement and leadership abilities. She started an Arts in Education Program in the neighboring Lawrence Public School District, bringing elementary classes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her efforts for PTA, Little League, as a docent for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and an advisor for B’nai Brith girls are noteworthy. She accomplished successful fundraising for breast cancer research by participating in several walk-a-thons.
    • FREDDA SHAPIRO LYNN, Class of 1954
      Hall of Fame Induction 2001
      In recognition of her accomplishments as an outstanding educational leader whose talents and human relations skills, along with her vision of quality education, achieved distinction in the field of early childhood education. Her exemplary work as a teacher and art specialist in our school district resulted in numerous commendations for her students.
    • GORDON SEAMAN, Class of 1954
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the electrical industry and his demonstrated community involvement while serving as an inspirational model of personal growth.
    • BARBARA KONHEIM KOLB, Class of 1955
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of her inspirational leadership as a school administrator and teacher in Hewlett-Woodmere.
    • BURT LEWIS, Class of 1956
      Hall of Fame Induction 2005
      In recognition of his distinguished law career and long-standing leadership serving the residents of the Hewlett-Woodmere community. He served for twelve years as a member of the Hewlett-Woodmere Board of Education, preceded by several years as vice president of the school board. Currently, he is serving as President of the Board of the Peninsula Counseling Center, a mental health agency in Nassau County, NY.
    • MELVIN SMALL, Ph.D., Class of 1956
      Hall of Fame Induction 2005
      In recognition of his outstanding career in education. He is currently named as the Distinguished Professor of History, Wayne State University, Michigan. He is an accomplished lecturer, panelist, author and co-author and has received numerous honors and awards. He has performed an abundance of university service, including being Chairman of the History Department, and has appeared on local and national TV, as well as being interviewed in a variety of print media.
    • SUSAN DEUTSCH (LOVE) WILKER, Class of 1957
      Hall of Fame Induction 2000
      In recognition of her perseverance since becoming a founding member of the Hewlett-Woodmere Alumni Association. As current president, her leadership and commitment have made the accomplishments of the Alumni Association possible. Her career as an early childhood special education teacher is a credit to our district.
    • RICHARD BRAVERMAN, Class of 1958
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his accomplishments as a distinguished attorney, member and President of the Hewlett-Woodmere Board of Education and Vice President of the Five Towns Senior Center.
    • MAJOR ROBERT G. HUFSCHMID, Class of 1958
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of his leadership at Hewlett High School, The United States Military Academy at West Point and as an outstanding officer in the United States Army. Died in Vietnam.
    • RONALD M. SICKMEN, Class of 1958
      Hall of Fame Induction 2006
      In recognition of his genuine caring, outstanding community and charitable service. He is a past president of the Centereach Rotary. Some other organizations who benefited from his efforts are the American Cancer Society, American Jewish Committee, Juvenile Diabetes, Comprehensive AIDS Program, and Guide Dog Foundation. He has also helped support school functions, youth organizations, and services for the elderly.
    • RICHARD SCHNEIDER, Class of 1959
      Hall of Fame Induction 1999
      In recognition of his dedication to the environment and as agronomist for Scotts Research. He is the first recipient of Scotts Research Excellence award.
    • DR. LANCE MICHAEL STERMAN, Class of 1959
      Hall of Fame Induction 2008
      In recognition of outstanding professional accomplishments in the field of emergency medicine, development of trauma centers, and community service. As a physician, director, and executive board member, his involvements have included ambulatory care centers, an industrial medical clinic, hospitals in New Jersey and Kentucky, and forensic medicine. He was a principal and co-investigator for clinical drug trials with several pharmaceutical companies. As a preceptor and lecturer, he helped instruct students from elementary through medical school about occupational healthcare and being patients, physician assistants, and future physicians.
    • PETER MAY, Class of 1960
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his leadership in business and real estate, and for his service as a trustee for several foundations, including the Laura Rosenberg Foundation.
    • SUSAN WALLING PRATT, Class of 1960
      Hall of Fame Induction 2002
      In recognition of her administrative accomplishments in Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools. Her devotion to develop anti-bias programs through cooperation and respect has had far-reaching effects. She has influenced the creation of multicultural awareness courses. The innovations in curriculum and staff development that she has brought to this district have improved education in Hewlett-Woodmere each year.
    • NORMA WOLFBERG ROSENBERG, Class of 1960
      Hall of Fame Induction 2002
      In recognition of her benevolence, including more than twenty years as President of The Laura Rosenberg Foundation. The funds from this foundation have supported pediatric leukemia research, a Pediatric Center and Family Lounge, an Ambulatory Surgical Suite at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as well as programs for camping and siblings of children treated for any pediatric cancer.
    • LOUISE GLUCK, Class of 1961
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of her distinguished career as a Pulitzer Prize poet and as a professor of literature and creative writing.
    • LEE DICHTER, Class of 1962
      Hall of Fame Induction 2000
      In recognition of his career as a talented re-recording engineer with achievements spanning television, commercials, documentaries and feature films. His mix credits include six documentaries that have won Academy Awards.
    • GARY R. WEISS, Class of 1962
      Hall of Fame Induction 2008
      In recognition of longstanding commitment to student achievement and charitable service for community organizations. As an owner of Incredible Feets, neighborhood retail stores, his participation on George W. Hewlett High School’s Business Advisory Board, Career and Interview Days, scholarship development, and mentoring has benefited numerous students. His sponsorships and board positions include local sports teams, Juvenile Diabetes Tennis Tournaments, 5 Towns Community Chest, Lawrence Golf Club, LI Chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and Peninsula Counseling Center.
    • JANE LIPPMAN FRIEDMAN, Class of 1963
      Hall of Fame Induction 1999
      In recognition of her achievements as President and CEO, HarperCollins Publishers. She was recently named on Vanity Fair's list of 200 Women Legends, Leaders and Trailblazers.
    • JERRY MILLER, Class of 1963
      Hall of Fame Induction 2009
      In recognition of outstanding, caring and gifted Economics instruction at Miami University, Ohio, having taught more than 20,000 students in almost 40 years and become assistant chair of the department with ten years as chief departmental advisor. This Professor served children locally at Camp DeBaun for 47 years, in Ohio as a faculty fraternity advisor for 33 years to more than 1000 students and was a fraternity National Scholarship Chair choosing over 100 awardees. He was elected by peers to serve on the Committee on Faculty Rights and Responsibilities and asked to serve as a member of the Utilities Commission for the City of Oxford, Ohio. He is an award-winning crisis intervention counselor.
    • DR. BILL SCHNALL, Class of 1963
      Hall of Fame Induction 2002
      In recognition of his dedication and leadership in the practice of pediatrics and the education of others in pediatric medicine. He has served with distinction as President of the North Pacific Pediatric Society and of his award-winning local school board.
    • DR. JOSEPH P. SOBEL, Class of 1963
      Hall of Fame Induction 2001
      In recognition of his outstanding professional contributions as a leader in the field of meteorology. His extensive experience includes forensic services, over one million weather forecasts and discussions on radio stations across the United States, international exposure by way of television appearances, and numerous publications and speeches.
    • PHILIP F. GUINSBURG, PH.D., Class of 1964
      Hall of Fame Induction 2006
      In recognition of his commitment to alcoholism and drug abuse counseling, couples therapy and crisis intervention. An experienced instructor, national and international presenter and author, he was selected Professional of the Year by the National Association of Addiction Counselors. His extensive community service earned him many awards. Currently, he is President of the American Academy of Psychotherapists.
    • CAROL KERR HARRISON, Class of 1964
      Hall of Fame Induction 2003
      In recognition of her outstanding dedication and leadership in civic life seen through many community service commitments. Her untiring efforts with the Hewlett-Woodmere Alumni Association include being editor of the newsletter since the group's inception, along with several other roles. She currently serves as President of the Jewish Community Center of the Greater Five Towns, (formerly the Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA).
    • DR. RAYMOND McCLOAT, Class of 1964
      Hall of Fame Induction 1997
      In recognition of his extended commitment to public education as a teacher, administrator and friend.
    • BRENT D. GLASS, Class of 1965
      Hall of Fame Induction 2006
      In recognition of his distinguished achievement in his field and scholarly knowledge of American history. Currently, he is the director of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. He previously served for fifteen years as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
    • TONY KORNHEISER, Class of 1965
      Hall of Fame Induction 1999
      In recognition of his achievements as a reporter and columnist. He is presently a sports columnist with the Washington Post.
    • CARLA S. LEWIS, Ph.D., Class of 1965

      In recognition of her dedication against domestic violence and to help individuals who are HIV/AIDS positive, at risk, chemically dependent, mentally ill, homeless or hungry. Her work as a research scientist, local, national and international presenter, author, instructor and activist is notable. Currently, she is the Director of Planning and Evaluation for the NYC based Project Hospitality.
    • ARNOLD PALLESCHI, Class of 1966
      Hall of Fame Induction 1999
      In recognition of his dedication to environmental causes and as Commissioner, Town of Hempstead Department of Water. He is the President of the Hewlett-Woodmere Police Athletic League.
    • ROSS BLECKNER, Class of 1967
      Hall of Fame Induction 1998
      In recognition of his national reputation as a juried artist and commitment to research initiatives in fighting AIDS.
    • DR. JOHN SANTOPOLO, Class of 1967
      Hall of Fame Induction 2003
      In recognition of his community and professional leadership. He practices endodontics, lectures, teaches, authors articles in dental journals, and has served as president in local, county and NY State dental organizations. He is currently on the Board of Governors of the NY State Dental Association, a board member of the Woodmere Merchants Association, Hewlett-Woodmere Alumni Association, and a member of the Bridge Committee.
    • DR. MARVIN W. BERKOWITZ, Class of 1968
      Hall of Fame Induction 2001
      In recognition of his distinguished career in psychology as a university professor, lecturer, consultant and author including outstanding contributions to the fields of child development and moral education. He is renowned for his national and international accomplishments.

      Hall of Fame Induction 2010                                                                                           

      In recognition of significant achievements as President and CEO at Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA). She has been working to eradicate senior hunger for more than 20 years and founded the Jack and Eleanor Borden Memorial Fund. Her communications background led to positions as newspaper reporter, magazine editor and publisher, radio commentator, TV producer. She worked in the public sector as Deputy Commissioner for Policy and External Affairs for the Social Security Administration, Director of Public Affairs and Director of Legislative Affairs for what was the Office of Human Development Services, including the Administration on Aging, in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

    • HON. EMILY PINES, Class of 1968
      Hall of Fame Induction 2002
      In recognition of her distinguished public service career, during which she earned significant awards and honors. As a former practicing attorney, she had an emphasis in the fields of municipal and commercial litigation. She was a former Suffolk County District Court Judge and is presently a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court.
    • DR. ARTHUR EVANS TAUBMAN, Class of 1968
      Hall of Fame Induction 2008
      In posthumous recognition of dedication as a physician of Orthopedics and pro-bono services for youth, homeless and communities in need. He was Chief Orthopedic Consultant, Port Authority, NY and NJ; Orthopedic Consultant, prison system, Rahway, NJ; Co-Chief, Orthopedic Clinic, Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, NJ; and awarded Valores Humanos for pro-bono treatment of Hispanic and Filipino communities, Hudson County, NJ. His volunteerism included sport-related injury services, Dickenson High School, Jersey City. He was a Cooperative Education Work Site Sponsor for the NJ School to Career and College Initiatives program.

This member of the Nassau County Medical Society, New York State Medical Society and Queens Gynecologic Society assisted the mentally disabled community at Hillside Hospital, the Parker Geriatric Center for Elderly, and the Adolescent Clinic at Long Island Jewish. Her community efforts include volunteering on the finance committee of a local public school district and membership in Hadassah.

She conducts programs about preventing injuries for athletes and plans to address fitness concerns for nursing home residents. Currently, she is a high school Health and Physical Education teacher.

      In recognition of his distinguished accomplishments as an international performing artist playing bass trombone for 25 years in the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), 10 years directing the New England Brass Band and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music. He has been soloist in BSO, Boston Pops and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. His world-wide masterclasses, award-winning recordings and participation in BSO Youth Activities are impressive. He published numerous articles in journals, newsletters and programs and co-authored Mastering the Trombone. His extensive musical abilities include playing serpent, ophicleide, bass sackbut, bass trumpet and contrabass trombone. He collaborated with YAMAHA to produce a bass trombone and a mouthpiece that bears his name.

      In recognition of her election to a judicial seat in Florida. She served as law clerk for a County Judge while attending the University of Miami School of Law. She was a criminal defense attorney for ten years. In 2006, she was appointed Traffic Magistrate in Broward County, Florida. Then she ran for election and was victorious in the primary, becoming the first Broward County Court Judge in 24 years to obtain over 50 percent of the vote when facing two or more opponents, thus avoiding a runoff election.

      In recognition of talented achievement in film, book and television writing and producing. His TV series credits include Prison Break, Law & Order, The Guardian, and The Sopranos. He is the executive producer of the reality TV show Beauty and the Geek. He co-wrote two movies, currently in post-production, that are scheduled for release in 2008. Slip and Fall, this attorney’s first legal and thriller fiction novel, reached national bestseller lists after only ten days in stores.

      In recognition of an extraordinary career as a leading authority on brain and spinal tumor research and surgery. He is an associate attending neurosurgeon at NY-Presbyterian Hospital, associate professor of neurological surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, NY, and the Director of the Cornell Brain Tumor Center. His extensive list of awards, lectures, papers, research and professional affiliations includes membership in several neurological surgeon associations, as well as the International Society for Stem Cell Research. Currently, he is a co-principal investigator in ongoing trials testing a new delivery method of targeted drug treatment for common types of brain cancer. He hopes to be able one day to offer patients proven and better therapy.

Past notable performances have included Susanna, Le nozze di Figaro, Green Mountain Opera Festival, Vermont; Semele, Semele, Florentine Opera Company, Wisconsin; Maøenka, The Bartered Bride, Opera Boston, Massachusetts; Rodelinda, Rodelinda, Portland Opera, Oregon; Hannah, The Merry Widow, Opera New Jersey; and Gretel, Hansel and Gretel, The Atlanta Opera, Georgia. Stony Brook University welcomed this Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera star last fall in her directorial debut for a series of Stony Brook Opera scenes. Her numerous concerts and recitals include being featured as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra.

He teaches Masterclasses at universities and conservatories throughout the U.S. His students perform around the world from Colorado to Mexico, Korea and Hong Kong. His credits include countless broadcasts and recordings.

Her TV series credits include roles on “Boston Legal” and “Family Law,” and appearances on “Law & Order: SVU”; “House, M.D.”; “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and TLC’s “Little People, Big World.” Her commitment and dedication to change stereotypes and attitudes that affect “little people” is evident in her body of work. She has shown extraordinary perseverance and ability to deal with adversity. Experience of this former doctoral student includes working as a mental health therapist and with people with physical disabilities.

His original music appeared on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly,” “Zoey 101” and MTV’s “Next.” His recordings include a 2010 release playing with several musicians on a 14-song album, “Sweet Sacrifice.” His community service includes support of “Autism Speaks” and performances for “Operation Smile” and AIDS patients.

His original designs led to licensing agreements with NBA and Elvis Presley Enterprises. He was the official artist for the 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame and 2010 NFL Hall of Fame Legends Event. He has donated time to inspire young artists and artwork for Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, NBA Players Association Charity Gala, Ludacris Foundation Charity 2007, Diabetes Research Institute, and City at Peace Organization for Children.
